Why has the “Bathhouse ” in Northeast China gone viral?

Since around 2020, Shenyang’s bathhouses have entered what’s called the 3.0 era. Businesses and investors began integrating almost every possible service—transforming from simple bathing and scrubbing spaces into hubs of leisure culture, dining, beauty salons, barber services, foot care, and ear cleaning. More than 20 large-scale bathhouses in Shenyang now provide all-in-one “eat-drink-play-relax” experiences, making them ideal spots for urban micro-getaways.

A bathhouse contains everything you want

Scrub Room Experience
After showering, soak in the pool to soften your skin and relax your body — then it’s scrub time! You’ll come out feeling refreshed and squeaky clean .
You can bring your own scrub towel or buy one on-site for about 5–8 RMB.
Options like red wine scrub or white vinegar scrub are also offered for a unique treat.

Hot Spring Pools (Free Access Area)
Each pool is thoughtfully designed — even the warm pools stay comfortably heated, so no worries about catching a chill. Kids absolutely love it here!

🎮 Public Leisure Zone
Most amenities in this area are free, with clear pricing only for optional extras. You’ll find:

  • A food & drink counter
  • Sauna rooms
  • Treehouse-style rest nooks
  • Gaming/E-sports zone
  • Photo bridge (with costumes & props provided)
  • Movie lounge
  • Kids’ play area

In the West we only have spas, but Chinese bathhouses feel like a much more vibrant cultural experience.

I’m so curious about “cuo zao.” They say that traditional scrubbing technique can leave you feeling completely renewed.

I have to go and experience this unique public space culture for myself.
